Our History
  • Founded in 1988

  • First home in 1993 at the First Congregational Church.

  • Partnered with Community Action Commission (now CommUnify) in 1999 to provide Head Start program.

  • Moved into 2115 State Street location in 2000.

  • Opened a second location at 2121 De la Vina Street in 2007.

  • After a successful campaign in 2014, we purchased the De la Vina building with the generous support of our community, ensuring a permanent home for Storyteller children.

  • Our programs serve 85 families each year.

Our Families
  • Our Storyteller program’s serve preschool aged children from Santa Barbara at-risk families living in transition or financial hardship. 

  • Many families live in unsecure housing, in shelters, or with multiple families in cramped quarters, which can impact child development.

  • Most of the families we serve fall below the federal poverty guideline.

  • Many families are single parents, teen parents, and/or have reported domestic violence. Over a quarter of our children are being raised by a grandparent or guardian.
